Passive Solar Homes:
When building a new home, consider maximizing your energy efficiency by making use of Passive Solar Design.
Passive Solar Design takes advantage of the sun’s heat by maximizing solar heat absorption while minimizing heat loss through conductive heat transfer. There are five critical elements of Passive Solar Home Design: solar heat collection, heat absorption, heat retention, heat distribution, and temperature control. A typical design would utilize south facing, un-shaded windows with solar heat gain coefficients (SHGC) of 0.6 or higher to collect solar energy. Adjacent to these windows, a large, dark surface, such as a floor or wall partitioning acts to absorb the solar energy collected through the windows. This surface is constructed of a material with large thermal mass, which retains or stores the heat produced by the sunlight. Air sealing, insulation, and efficient windows aid in the retention of heat. Most passive solar homes are designed to take advantage of conduction, convection, and radiation to distribute the collected heat. Fans, ducts, or blowers may also be employed. Finally, roof overhangs, operable windows or skylights, and/or vents can be utilized in summer months for passive cooling.

Energy Performance Score
Sol Coast is a New Homes Trade Ally. We are trained and supported by the Energy Trust of Oregon to build High Performance homes and ensure you receive all available incentives. Sol Coast Construction built the first home to receive an Energy Performance Score in Coos County. An Energy Performance Score allows you to assess cost effectiveness and environmental impact of your home. Click here for more information.
This home was designed and constructed by Sol Coast Companies in 2009 and was rated a high performance home by the Energy Trust of Oregon. It was constructed with staggered stud framing using local, renewable material for high heat retention. Its tight construction reduces heat loss through air leakage.
Earth Advantage Certification
The Earth Advantage® New Homes certification provides certifications for new homes that satisfy standard requirements for energy efficiency, healthy indoor air quality, resource efficiency, environmental responsibility, and water conservation. Earth Advantage homes have healthier living environments, lower operating costs, reduced environmental impacts, and reduced resource consumption. Homes receive Earth Advantage Silver, Gold, or Platinum certifications based on two third-party verification visits. For more information, visit the Earth Advantage Website.
Sol Coast Construction built this Earth Advantage Certified home in 2009. It was constructed with staggered stud framing using local, renewable material for high heat retention. Its tight construction reduces heat loss through air leakage. Solar thermal collectors on the roof supply year-round solar heated water, further reducing fossil fuel consumption.
